Choosing a wedding venue in Italy: it’s complicated

You've found it: the Italian villa with the garden you've been dreaming about, the historic palazzo with original frescoes, or the countryside estate where dinner under the stars feels like the most natural thing in the world.

You've saved the photos and started imagining your wedding there. And honestly, we get it. Choosing your venue is one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding in Italy.

But a beautiful venue and the right venue aren't always the same thing. Before signing the contract, there are a few details worth looking into, not to spoil the romance, but to make sure the place you've fallen in love with can really bring your vision to life.

The garden is perfect. But what about the weather?

You're dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, aperitivo in the garden and dinner beneath the Italian sky. And while Northern Italy offers plenty of beautiful days, summer temperatures can be intense and rain is always a possibility.

A good rain plan is essential, but don't forget to consider the sun, too. Where will it be during your ceremony? Will your guests be sitting in direct sunlight, squinting or reaching for their sunglasses just as the photographer captures the moment? The position of the sun affects not only everyone's comfort, but also the light in your photographs.

We've had to decide on the wedding day itself whether a ceremony should take place with the villa as a backdrop or under the shade of the trees. Both settings were beautiful, but the position of the sun made all the difference.

If your dream ceremony spot offers little shade, there may still be simple solutions, such as parasols or elegant fans for your guests. And if the weather changes, make sure the indoor alternative can accommodate everyone comfortably while preserving as much of your original vision as possible.

The point isn't to plan for every possible disaster. It's to have a good alternative, so you can enjoy the day whatever the Italian weather has in store.

The rental fee looks reasonable. But what's included?

Two venues with similar rental fees can have very different overall costs. One might include furniture, lighting equipment and certain services, while another charges extra for essentials such as additional hours, cleaning, security or hired equipment.

Supplier policies matter, too. Some venues require you to work with their preferred caterers or other professionals, while others allow you to choose your own but charge additional fees for external suppliers.

Before comparing prices, ask for a clear breakdown of what's included, what costs extra and which restrictions apply. A lower rental fee doesn't always mean a lower overall budget, and understanding the difference early helps you decide where your money is best spent.

Every corner is beautiful. But does the day actually work?

A venue might have the perfect garden for your ceremony, a terrace for aperitivo and a beautiful room for dinner, but how easily can your guests move between them?

Consider distances, accessibility and how each space connects to the next. Sometimes, adjusting the timeline or choosing a different setup for one part of the day is all it takes to make everything flow naturally.

The goal isn't simply to find beautiful spaces, but to make sure they work together to create a celebration that feels effortless for you and your guests.

So, is it the right venue for you?

A venue doesn't have to be perfect in every respect to be the right one. Some limitations can be worked around, some extra costs may be worth it, and some compromises might not matter to you at all.

What matters is understanding the difference before you commit, so you can choose a place that works with your vision, your priorities and the experience you want to create.

Falling in love with a venue is the easy part. Knowing what to ask before you book is where things get interesting!
